Summary

From the author of the international mega-bestseller The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck comes a counterintuitive guide to the problems of hope。

We live in an interesting time。 Materially, everything is the best it’s ever been—we are freer, healthier and wealthier than any people in human history。 Yet, somehow everything seems to be irreparably and horribly f*cked—the planet is warming, governments are failing, economies are collapsing, and everyone is perpetually offended on Twitter。 At this moment in history, when we have access to technology, education and communication our ancestors couldn’t even dream of, so many of us come back to an overriding feeling of hopelessness。

What’s going on? If anyone can put a name to our current malaise and help fix it, it’s Mark Manson。 In 2016, Manson published The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck, a book that brilliantly gave shape to the ever-present, low-level hum of anxiety that permeates modern living。 He showed us that technology had made it too easy to care about the wrong things, that our culture had convinced us that the world owed us something when it didn’t—and worst of all, that our modern and maddening urge to always find happiness only served to make us unhappier。 Instead, the “subtle art” of that title turned out to be a bold challenge: to choose your struggle; to narrow and focus and find the pain you want to sustain。 The result was a book that became an international phenomenon, selling millions of copies worldwide while becoming the #1 bestseller in 13 different countries。

Now, in Everthing Is F*cked, Manson turns his gaze from the inevitable flaws within each individual self to the endless calamities taking place in the world around us。 Drawing from the pool of psychological research on these topics, as well as the timeless wisdom of philosophers such as Plato, Nietzsche, and Tom Waits, he dissects religion and politics and the uncomfortable ways they have come to resemble one another。 He looks at our relationships with money, entertainment and the internet, and how too much of a good thing can psychologically eat us alive。 He openly defies our definitions of faith, happiness, freedom—and even of hope itself。

With his usual mix of erudition and where-the-f*ck-did-that-come-from humor, Manson takes us by the collar and challenges us to be more honest with ourselves and connected with the world in ways we probably haven’t considered before。 It’s another counterintuitive romp through the pain in our hearts and the stress of our soul。 One of the great modern writers has produced another book that will set the agenda for years to come。

As much fun to read and just as useful as Manson's preceding book: "The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A Fuck"。 The title might be deemed vulgar, crude, and deter some people from even attempting to read it。 Which is a pity。 On the other hand, I am sure that another more polite title would not have caught my attention。 It reminded me of a something Hemingway said: "The most essential gift for a good writer is a built-in, shockproof, shit detector"。 As much fun to read and just as useful as Manson's preceding book: "The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A Fuck"。 The title might be deemed vulgar, crude, and deter some people from even attempting to read it。 Which is a pity。 On the other hand, I am sure that another more polite title would not have caught my attention。 It reminded me of a something Hemingway said: "The most essential gift for a good writer is a built-in, shockproof, shit detector"。 。。。more

A few good points, but overall terribly redundant。 If you're more seasoned in the genre of self-help, I do not recommend bothering as you'll probably know everything this book is trying to teach you。 I'd be more inclined to recommend Mark Manson's first book (The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k) and stopping there。 A few good points, but overall terribly redundant。 If you're more seasoned in the genre of self-help, I do not recommend bothering as you'll probably know everything this book is trying to teach you。 I'd be more inclined to recommend Mark Manson's first book (The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k) and stopping there。 。。。more

This is a good book about Psychology, Politics, Philosophy, Social Justice and Spirituality。 I liked the audiobook very much。 A solid 4-star book。 One star off for the title。

At first, I thought it’s a bit too philosophical。 I really love it at the end。I’ve read many self-help books, this probably is the last one。

It took me a long time to finish this book。 It isn’t really a page turner。 It has the author’s thoughts not necessarily coherent。 If you’ve read his first book The subtle art of not giving a f***, this seems a tad bit repetitive with a lot of negativity and constant talk about nihilism。 I would recommend you to not read this book。。

This was a good read。 Made me think。 I did not understand the part he says "Why a woman forced to wear a sari and one who has a choice must choose their sacrifice。"Several times the author mentions "People as a a means and also as an ends", not sure what that means。I kinda understand and don't understand the feeling brain vs the thinking brain。 This book is on my re-read list。 This was a good read。 Made me think。 I did not understand the part he says "Why a woman forced to wear a sari and one who has a choice must choose their sacrifice。"Several times the author mentions "People as a a means and also as an ends", not sure what that means。I kinda understand and don't understand the feeling brain vs the thinking brain。 This book is on my re-read list。 。。。more

Mark takes us on another counterintuitive journey by looking at the world as if what's wrong with it isn't that there's no hope for us, but rather that there's too much。 Absolutely loved it! This one is even better than the first。Not that the message radically different, mind you。 In Everything is F*cked, Mark Manson warns to against the nature of our desires, basing himself in philosophy, psychology and neuroscience to make the argument that what we feel is never the best counsel。 That you should always police what you're hoping for and listen to your pain for guidance。 Once again he discusses popular ideas in a new and thoughtful way。Everything is F*cked is counterintuitive everyt This one is even better than the first。Not that the message radically different, mind you。 In Everything is F*cked, Mark Manson warns to against the nature of our desires, basing himself in philosophy, psychology and neuroscience to make the argument that what we feel is never the best counsel。 That you should always police what you're hoping for and listen to your pain for guidance。 Once again he discusses popular ideas in a new and thoughtful way。Everything is F*cked is counterintuitive everything going on in society right now。 It argues that we shouldn't wish for a world without pain because that world is impossible to have and that we're going to end up manufacturing pain against sillier and sillier things。 That we should choose our pain, use it to our advantage and love it because it gives meaning to our life。 It's a message I find super empowering but it's also kind of the end of self-help for me。 I don't even consider Manson a self-help guy anymore。 At least not after this book。 He's more like a modern life thinker to me。 。。。more

Very great ideas mentioned in the book。 It felt like Mark put a bunch of articles together and a connection between the chapters was lacking。 There was a small weak connection that was made in the last chapter but I don't think it was sufficient。 Very great ideas mentioned in the book。 It felt like Mark put a bunch of articles together and a connection between the chapters was lacking。 There was a small weak connection that was made in the last chapter but I don't think it was sufficient。 。。。more

While there were some nuggets of wisdom to be pulled out for deep thought and consideration, the truth is this book feels like a regurgitation or other philosophies and truths。 No further expansion or insight, merely what felt like a condescending tirade against any other train of thought except this particular line of thought。 It was exhausting。 As a fan of his first book, disappointing。

Keshav Kumar

The book has let me unravel the truth of human existence in the universe。 And, has driven the idea of hope from shitty situation humanity。

Makes some excellemt points about "the uncomfortable truth"。 Hard hitting and felt myself feeling worse after some parts。 All in all I learned alot and feel it will help me! Just like The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck, the first half of this book started extremely slow and took me a while to get into (hence taking 3 months to finish)。 But the ending picked up with “life changing” information in every chapter。 I did enjoy it, but it didn’t have the momentum that his first book had - probably because the message was relatively the same and I already knew his “unexpected” way of writing。 Still definitely enjoyed it though!!

This was an interesting book with view points that had me thinking about different aspects of life。 I was waiting for the inspirational parts that I thought would be given, which never came but that still didn’t make it any less entertaining。

There are some generalizations that I didn't agree with。 It's clear he doesn't have take into account things like privilege。 However, there are parts of this book that were so incredibly beautiful。 I highly recommend。 Will definitely be buying。 There are some generalizations that I didn't agree with。 It's clear he doesn't have take into account things like privilege。 However, there are parts of this book that were so incredibly beautiful。 I highly recommend。 Will definitely be buying。 。。。more

How would you follow up a six-million-plus copy bestseller like THE SUBTLE ART OF NOT GIVING A F*CK? Would you give the world a sequel? The Even Subtler Art? The Subtle Art For Teens? Well, if you’re Mark Manson, you take your time, you stay super tight on integrity, and you follow your heart where it leads you。 I think of his brand new book as Mark taking us up, up, up into a gigantic macro-everything view of things。 He has such a gift for reading bigger books than I can lift and then distilling all the giant complexity from them into simple (and profanity-laced) prose。 EVERYTHING IS F*CKED offers a slew of Mark’s epic distillations on topics as diverse as religion, politics, and our unhealthy relationships with money, entertainment, and the internet。 I won’t lie。 There were times the book made my head hurt! It was challenging (for me anyway) and I sometimes wanted him to come back down to street level。 But overall I felt it's a well-written guide for those feeling generally itchy about the world today and an encouragement to keep moving。 I feel like Mark will be a writer to follow for decades。 。。。more

Listened to the audio book and enjoyed it。 Not the most highbrow of reads but engaging and thought provoking none the less。 I often hear people warn others that this isn't a self help book。 I listened, thought, understood and it helped 🤷‍♂️。 Listened to the audio book and enjoyed it。 Not the most highbrow of reads but engaging and thought provoking none the less。 I often hear people warn others that this isn't a self help book。 I listened, thought, understood and it helped 🤷‍♂️。 。。。more

Better the first one。 More complicated thoughts in this one but as always very well written and full of irony which is a characteristic of the author。

I did my research after reading this book, most people said: "Mark Manson is the guy that you don't want to be friends with, but his principles and philosophy are debatably agreeable。"Yes, i think it's true。 Maybe his style of writing sucks or his approach and perception is not for everyone, but the message of this book is so important in today's society。A quick overview: the author discussed hopelessness in our society。 Wait what hopelessness? We are so lucky because our generation is living in the most convenient and comfortable time。 Technology wise, entertainment, communication, transportation, business, monetisation, pleasure, fame etc, everything is fast, easy and instant, yet everyone is sad, depressed and hopeless。 We are always hooked up with "what we want or what's new" instead of what we need, what people around us really needs and what truly matters。 We are growing and living in a world where algorithm, media and pleasure controls us。 Manson tackled the difference and importance of "thinking brain" and the "feeling brain" where nowadays, people are most likely to act/react based on their emotions and how they feel。 People gets easily offended。 There's so much hate in social media。 People rant all over twitter; chances are most of us are either praising or complaining about something。 We react too much about everything。 We get so emotionally carried away。Another issue is that: Life of an average person with an average job is almost considered as failure。 Likes and comments are the new basis of validation and respect。 People are sad if they weren't able to compensate their feelings, instead of taking time to think clearly before doing an action (before clicking, posting, commenting, saying, buying, doing, and so on)。The author also discussed some controversial topics about politics, religion, feminism, racism, psychology, philosophy and other social issues。 With all honesty, this is the book that will trigger you to put down or placed on your dnf list, and it's okay。 It took me 3 attempts to finish this one, after reading The Subtle Art; maybe because of his style of writing, his choice of words, or maybe the books is too long that is could be more simplified and be direct to the point。 A lot people are saying that it is like a compilation of blogs。 But for me its okay。 Since it took me "months" to finish this book, i'll rate this 3 stars。 I got so bored halfway through。 The message of his book is truly an eye opener but the concept and the "hey bro" privileged-white-guy type of writing is not for me (I'm not being a racist though)。 。。。more
